September is Roald Dahl month – if you missed Roald Dahl Day on the 13th (his birthday), then why not join the thousands of parents currently turning their children orange, crafting golden tickets and searching out top hats and canes from the back of their wardrobes in preparation for Dahlicious Dress Up Day on the 26th? Back for its fourth year, the day will see classrooms full of Oompa-Loompas, BFGs, Matildas and Fantastic Foxes raising money for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity to make life better for seriously ill children.
And if those aren’t reason enough to celebrate then why not use this year’s 50th anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as an excellent excuse for increasing your confectionery intake whilst saving your children from an extra trip to the dentist by sharing these printables with them instead…?
The Roald Dahl website itself has a wealth of resources available for those who can’t wait to open up his world of pure imagination. If you’re still planning your costumes then why not download, cut out and decorate your very own Mr Twit beard or take a leaf out of Matilda’s friend Lavender’s book and download your own newt to scare teachers like Miss Trunchbull or other unsuspecting adults.
Is your school not able to take part in Dahlicious Dress Up Day this year? Then why not throw your own Charlie and the Chocolate Factory using the Party Pack created by Puffin Books. The pack includes an invite to the whipple-scrumptious party, instructions on how to make your own top hat, wordsearch, an Oompa-Loompa-Lympics game, door hanger and an invitation to invent your own sweet treat.
Party Delights Blog also offers “all the ingredients you need for a party in honour of the world’s most famous chocolatier” with printable labels for your sweet table, chocolate bar wrappers, drinks labels, bookmarks, candy decorations and, of course, a golden ticket.
As well as also including the party pack on its own website, publisher Puffin offers lots of other Roald Dahl Activities to download including a wordsearch, book plates, bunting, fact sheets, quizzes, how to make your own enormous crocodile, crazy character cubes and missing words.
Publisher Scholastic also includes the Concertina Crocs activity sheet on its website but you’ll also be able to find printable illustrated instructions on how to make your own Roly-Poly Bird too.
For posters of many of Dahl’s most well-known chacracters head to Activity Village where you’ll also find a golden ticket blank, the chance to design your own chocolate bar and even a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw Roald Dahl himself, as well as colouring pages, worksheets, puzzles and a section specifically dedicated to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in honour of its half century milestone.
It is, of course, a writer’s words that create the characters and plot lines and many readers have found inspiration in Dahl quotations that resonate even when isolated from their original context.
Sarah from See Sarah’s Style chooses “When you think good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely” to inspire her Roald Dahl print as it “always puts her in a good mood”.
And, for Mama Miss‘s Melissa, it’s the words “And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it” that captured her creative imagination.
