Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu festival celebrated in the autumn.  Signifying the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, festival preparations and celebrations can last up to five days but the main festival night is observed on the 15th day of the month of Kartika in the Hindu calendar – which this year is Thursday, October 23rd.  Find out more and join in the celebrations with these free printables…

Kim Vij and her husband do their best to expose their children to both their faiths, Hinduism and Christianity, and so she designed a simple Diwali handout for her daughter so she could learn some of the significant details about the festival.  They shared it with her class at school and also share it with us on the blog she co-author’s The Educators’ Spin On It.

The BBC’s website school resources section includes two The Story of Rama and Sita worksheets and a letter writing activity as well as images of Diwali clothes.

Activity Village’s Diwali printables include how to draw Diwali, cards, money envelopes, posters, scrapbook papers, story paper, writing pages, an acrostic poem and letters.

Publisher Scholastic hosts a rangoli pattern on its website inviting “children to create their own coloured rangoli patterns with this useful template using chalks, glitter and coloured rice” and more rangoli colouring pages can be found on 1234 Diwali, Arty Sorts and Cool2bKids.

Further colouring pages are available from Kiddy House which includes several types of homes decorated with oil lamps to print out as well as a link to a map of India.
